Toastmasters Day!! Talking about YouTube
Today is my weekly Toastmaster meeting. I have missed a few weeks due to traveling but I am back. Today, I will presenting my first speech from my Advance Communicator manual. This is the manual you receive after achieving you first CC or Competent Communicator award. My topic will be one of my favorites…..YouTube!
I call myself a YouTube University alumni. I have learned everything for canning salsa to installing a thermostat into my home, all by watching YouTube. I am huge fan of it because I can look for everyday people and even well qualified companies to instruct me on exactly what I need to know. Even down to the product name a serial number!
I am always complimented on my topics when it comes to to Toastmasters because I am far from a boring, cookie cutter type person. My audience is a bit of an older group so I will have to do a little more breaking down of my topic than I would if I were talking to a group of teenagers or millennials but that is the challenge and beauty of Toastmasters.

The new world of paper planners
Planners are a big thing that I thought was outdated??? Yes, there are planner snobs and $100+ planners, fountain pens..stickers the works!! But let me start from the beginning…
One of my favorite cartoons is The Boondocks on Adult Swim. Admittedly, after the last season it really fell off. However, there are always words of wisdom between the crass stylings of this cartoon. In one episode a character name Gin Rummy speaks of know unknowns…things we don’t know we don’t know. This was exactly what I thought when I discovered the world of PLANNERS and groups all over Facebook pertaining to the same thing!!!
Well, I have been using my paper planner for a year and I love it. I can see all the things we need to get done. With 5 kids, 3 cats and a husband that can add up to a lot. I can see events coming up with great ease. So, I purchase my new planner and posted it on my personal Facebook page just because I thought is was so cute. Well, 2 of my friends jumped right on it and it became this long thread of Facebook groups and brand names of the hottest planners and washi tape source….WTH is washi tape?? They began talking about how they decorate their paper planners and that there was a an entire community of #plannergeeks. What is this you say??
It’s true!! If you type Planners or Planning into Youtube and Instagram you will be blown away by these young ladies pimping out their planners. The cute washi tape, the Erin Condren, Kikki and Filofax name brands. I did not know about any of this until I began to research. WOW! I thought I was doing something with my little PlanAhead planner but I have definitely been slacking. So I made a few trips to the Dollar Tree and Wally world, which according to planner community is not the best place. I had no choice since I am in the country which lacks any sort of stationary store.
I made do and now, I love my planner more than ever. I am not at the level of these awesome ladies, whose videos are below, but with my love of crafting I am sure I can get into this really quick. I have already made a “planner charm” for my planner and I write everything thing down in it. I am now more excited to plan and I enjoy crossing out the tasks as they get accomplished. I am looking to upgrade to a fountain pen soon …oooooooh! I will keep you posted on my weekly planner pages and links to sticker providers. In the mean time here are some links that have inspired me to plan.
Sewing class survey
I am doing a survey to help better determine what sewing classes we will offering for our online YouTube, in person and blog visitors. Since people from all over the world visit me everyday I would like to better serve you.
I know that people desire different things when it comes to a sewing class and we need help if finding out what that is. Soon we will be offering free and paid classes and tutorials on our site as well as in person. However, we need to know what you would like to see. If there is nothing in the survey that applies to you feel free to leave a comment below. All responses are anonymous in the survey, however comments on the blog will be moderated. The Testimony nobody wants to hear
When people give their testimony I love to hear where they have come from. The funny thing is that nobody asks mine……NOBODY!! People who know me already know my testimonial. They know me better than I know myself. People look at the outside and feel like, she has no struggles, she has always had it easy. Part of this is true, I have been very blessed in my life. However, the truth is I never went to church with my family. I knew nothing of Jesus, Easter or the bible. Of course we had that big bible on the coffee table that most households have but I never opened it. It was just a book to me. I never opened it.
In my youth I was naturally a “goody 2 shoes”. I did things by the book just because it was the right thing to do….(ok, I did a little dirt). But I was the one to tell my friends I was taking them home when they wanted to stay out past their curfew. My mom always said I was an old soul. My friends’ parents however saw me as some sort of bad influence because they dragged their kids to church and mine didn’t. However, they were doing more crap than I was, they just had no idea or needed someone to blame beside themselves for their kids’ behavior. I dealt with it because I knew the truth and really had no desire or reason to go to church. If it is going to make me grouchy like my friends every Sunday morning you can have it.
As a family we did the Christmas celebrations and Easter baskets but I never knew the reasons behind them. I just knew that people would say “I’m blessed” or “I’m going to pray for you”…uumm Ok? Nobody told me anything about the meaning behind it. They almost made it seem as if their prayer was a bad thing. Almost a necessary evil for my “wicked ways” *shrug*. Knock yourself out if it makes you feel better about yourself which most of the time that is what it was about anyway. I know better than you so I will save you with my prayer rather than talk to you face to face. Yes, that makes perfect sense to someone who knows nothing of Christ…(insert sarcasm here).
I really had it pretty easy. No major events, besides my parents’ divorce and their personal drama. My family was healthy and all was good in my little world but I still felt empty and a little lost. I was still searching for some sort of closure or reason why I was so content and why others had so much turmoil. The song Who am I by Casting Crowns is a perfect song for how I felt I was like the person in the Forever Jones song He Wants it All. So, while people were praying for me and walking off, they left me with nothing to work with, no direction.
Then, I met Janice White. She was my best friend in Cosmetology school and was also 17 years my senior. We would sit and eat our Snack well cereal bars during our breaks in Cosmetology school. Not only did she introduce me to the bad habit of coffee drinking at 17 🙂 but she also introduced me to Jesus. Something that all the people who claimed they prayed for me never did. All that talk and they never thought to ask….”do you know Jesus?”..”do you understand what prayer is?” Janice would give me her old Sunday school lessons and I would look through them and I then I bought my first Women’s Study bible. I remember riding home listening to the first gospel tape I ever bought by CeCe Winans as she sang “I surrender all” and I did. I still cannot hear that song without tears. After many church visits and even being members nobody ever asked my testimony. They see the husband, the kids and house and never ask how, why. or when.
As I got older my father explained to me that I had the hardest testimony of all. I was living in the blessing and did not realize it. WOW! The problem is that most people who live in the blessing, before discovering the blessor, never realize it and take it for granted. They feel it is all about them. However, I knew in my spirit that something was missing and I wanted it. I have met 4 people in my life that have truly made me say wow I want what they have. I wanted that spirit of being free and knowing I am not alone.
That is the way I want to show people Jesus, not by my ability to quote a verse or use “Christianese” to the point that I have to look up what you are talking about. I want to feel Jesus when I see you. If you are blessed to have truly met a person that makes you say God is Real without mentioning his name….then my friend you are blessed.
If you’re a Christian why do you sound like every other Christian?? Don’t be a Christian cliche.
Now the word of the Lord came to me, saying, Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the natioIsaiah 64:8
But now, O Lord, you are our Father; we are the clay, and you are our potter; we are all the work of your hand.
These 2 verses are saying that each of us is made personally by God. As a crafter I know when I make something that it will never be exactly like a previous creation no matter how hard I try. However, when I see many Christians, they put so many rules and regulations on what you can and cannot do. What you can and cannot say. The same verses..the same songs..the same emphasis on what is right or wrong (as long as it does not personally affect them) which in my opinion is very cowardly.
However, God made us each individual. He knew we had certain talents, mannerisms and personal styles that were unique to us. So many Christians cancel all that out and become these biblical robots. The excuse being “I can longer be of the world” but you are wasting all that God has given you because you have pushed some of the parts God wants you to use to spread His word back. If you have tattoos you could meet a non-believer who is more comfortable speaking to you because of your commonality. If you have a talent for singing or writing and it may have some words that people believe are not of God. However, the way you say it in your Spoken Word or your song has touched someone and made them rethink some things about their life, why bind that up.
By suppressing these things and not using those talents you are, as many would say, “no earthly good”
Use what God has given you personally. Don’t be a follower of other Christians be a follower of Christ. Read the word, study the word. God will reveal things to you. There is room in the kingdom of God for your talents. He gave them to you so don’t expect others to understand. That is when you take that leap of faith. Start that book club, dance team or cooking group. Trust me, those robots will keep moving along but you will be showing people that you are an original and not part of the “Christian Clique” Don’t waste that talent trying to fit in..stand out!!
John 13:35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
